And I'd rather walk your crew an extra thirty steps than have them walk out to a tipped unit.
The standard field method is driving steel stakes or rebar pins through the anchor holes in the unit's base skid, angled back away from the direction of pull, deep enough that the soil is doing the holding. On Lubbock County ground that's usually the easy part โ our caliche and hardpan grip steel beautifully once you get through the top crust. The catch is the crust. Late summer, that top few inches of dry sandy loam out toward Shallowater or New Deal is basically dust, and a short stake in dust is decoration. Go deeper. Two feet where you can. If you hit real caliche and the stake stops cold at eight inches, that's fine โ that's rock, and rock is the anchor. What doesn't work: one stake on the upwind corner. Wind doesn't push straight, it lifts and twists, so a unit anchored at one point turns into a hinge and pivots. Pin diagonal corners at minimum, four if it's an exposed pad. On a caliche field road where you truly can't drive steel, we shift to strapping and ballast instead of pretending a stake went in.
